Tunnel Vision Could Kill You
During the pandemic, my commute to the office became a nightmare. The bridge connecting my part of town to the rest of the city required extensive repairs after damage was discovered. This coincided almost perfectly with the start of the pandemic. My commute ballooned from 15-20 minutes pre-pandemic to 60-90 minutes as we all started to return to the office. I was ecstatic when the bridge finally reopened for traffic. Nothing beats you down more than spending hours in slow-moving traffic every day.
I regularly arrive at the office between 5 am and 7 am when I have critical deliverables. This approach gives me a solid block of 2-4 hours to focus on a single task before the avalanche of meetings starts. On these days when I commute in, I make it a habit to time my journey. I start the stopwatch when I pull out of my driveway and stop it when I reach the office parking garage. The transit time metric is one that I pay attention to whenever I go to the office.
